Plessy was the African American who refused to sit in a Jim Crow car, resulting in the supreme court case against Ferguson.
Plessy's Argument: Plessy stated that his constitutional rights were being violated. He stated that the blacks were not being treated equal and that he should have to sit in a Jim Crow car because of his race. He strongly believed that the blacks were treated much more poorly than whites and that it is against the constitution. The reason for segregation is Jim Crow Laws. You might be wondering: what are Jim Crow Laws? Jim Crow laws are laws that separated the whites from the blacks. The white always had the better way, while the African Americans had to struggle to live. For example: the blacks had to drink from different water fountains, they had to go to different schools, and the blacks had the worst jobs, which paid low. Plessy was so mad because he refused to sit in a Jim Crow car, which is a way of transportation but for blacks. The blacks had the bad trains, which are more dangerous than the train the whites rode on.
Plessy was looked white, however he was 1/8th African American. So when he was asked to move to a Jim Crow car he refused, this is what led to the court case Plessy vs Ferguson.
Because of the court case Plessy vs Ferguson many blacks were inspired and started to not follow the Jim Crow laws. The African Americans started to riot because thy believed that their rights were being violated. They started to refuse to sit in a Jim Crow car, and go to different schools. They did not believe that they should be treated poorly and be discriminated upon. Later on, the African American wishes came true. Eventually, the Jim Crow laws were abolished and were against the law. Sadly though, today there is still arguments over racial equality and some people still discriminate upon the race of people. Luckly, though many people do not believe in Jim crow laws and they now know that it was wrong.Unfortunately though, there are still a few people who believe that whites should be treated higher, but it is against the law. A few laws now today is: Everybody should be treated the same and nobody should be denied their rights.
The above image is a picture of Plessy. Even though he looks white he is 1/8th African American, this is why he was asked to sit in a Jim Crow car.
Something that is relevant to this event today is racism. People first started being racist and doing racist acts during this time. Sadly, they treated the African Americans badly and discriminated on them.
